Back To School Guide Day Three

Do you or your students have trouble staying organized with all the papers that you are bombarded with during the school year?  I have a few programs that will help make your life a little easier this year.

Take Action File + Student File System

The Take Action File and Student File System help alleviate your problems by finding a place to put papers that you or your student still need to act on -- as well as subject files for middle/high school.  This program was created by Eileen Roth author of  Organizing for Dummies, she was also featured on The Today Show, and Oprah.Eileen Roth’s approach to organization is to put everything in its place. And she does this using systems, there are two versions - the middle/high school, and college. I've been working with the middle/high school one, and it has really helped me get organized with the pile of papers i had thrown in the closet. Mom's with elementary student's you can get the Take Action File without the student file system. Some things i found out were neat does not necessarily mean organized. Papers can be neatly filed away in folders, but if you can’t find them quickly, they aren’t organized in any type of system. Eileen’s organizing principles are simple and practical. And once you implement them, it will only take you minutes a day to stay that way. All you do is follow the system. Organizing your files, paper or computer, usually involves designing a new file system. Eileen starts out with some basic ideas, and then you work together to customize a system that works for you. Here are some tips from Eileen Roth

• The first thing you want to do is to Purge. What is it that you don’t need to keep? Ask yourself how long you have been saving those papers? Have you ever used them again?
• If you haven’t used them in a year or two, then throw them out. They are just taking up space.
• Certain documents needs to be kept for legal reasons. Check with your accountant for those financial documents you need for audits or IRS retention requirements.
• Other documents might be historical, i.e. you might want to keep several copies of a marketing brochure, or a conference brochure. Toss out the rough drafts.
• Those documents you really think you need for reference need to be put in an organized file system. Just keep the items you really think you will refer to again, don’t keep information you won’t use.

Vision Board

What is a Vision Board you ask?  A Vision Board is a visual representation of the goals your child wants to achieve this year. V.I.S.S. International teaches a winning formula techniques that will help you make the goals come to life. My vision board experience has been very positive! The VISS weekly videos show me how to structure my desires and goals so that my thoughts, feelings and actions aligned with one another. The process they teach brings absolute clarity and focus to whatever it is you want to achieve. We started using the S-O-A-R study skills book, it is very interactive we were interested to find out what what type of intellegence we had (section 1) and find out how we spend our time.  My boys were reluctent at first, but when i told them that study skill will help them get better grades, and finish there work faster they were in.  The S-O-A-R Homework Help! for Parents Disc set is very helpful to me as a parent,  The first two audio disks that provide simple, family-friendly strategies that parents can implement to support the S-O-A-R Program.  Disk three is a CD rom and has a homework problem inventory, ebook, and a slideshow.   S-O-A-R also download one of their FREE Toolkits featuring "25 Ways to Make Homework Easier...Tonight!"  Check out their website at soarstudyskills.com and follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

Back to School Guide Day Two

Books are a way for you to visit new worlds and learn new things.  Today books are so easy to get with all the new technology out there, like iPhone, iPads, Kindle, and Nook.  Today I'm going to tell you about some very useful books that you should absolutely have in you collection.

First let me tell you about some fun IPhone, IPad and Android apps.  These apps are made by Ocean House Media.  You all know Dr. Suess, and Little Critter...they not only make book apps for these books, but many others that your children will enjoy.  On Monday August 29 2011 Ocean House Media kicked off its Back to School Sale with ten Dr. Seuss books reduced to $1.99 each now through September 4.  For a five week period, from August 29 through October 2, a new selection of omBooks will be on sale each week from popular series such as The Berenstain Bears, Little Critter, Five Little Monkeys and Smithsonian Collection.

   The Mystery of the Silver Statue is an amazing story for young readers and adults alike! It includes heroic deeds, the search for buried treasure, and lessons on overcoming real-life struggles. This is a must read for any youngster. It's fast-paced, exciting, and its lessons are priceless.  Best friends B.T. and Jimmy are fishing on the bank of a river when B.T. notices some movement at an old abandoned house. With the help of some spy knowledge, they embark on a quest to find an old statue from the revolutionary war. Their journey almost gets one of them captured by two robbers searching for the statue as well, and forces them to figure out numerous puzzles.  My boys 9 and 5 were on the edges of their seats, listening to the adventures of these two Vermont boys. This story is based on a real mystery from Vermont's  history and really brings the reader into the story. It's not easy to write history and get young readers to enjoy it, the Ray Perkins did a great job of intertwining the history and creative writing.  Excellent for young readers!!  And look for his new book "The Mystery of the Brick Kingdom" Due out this fall.  It's sure to be a great book!!  Follow Ray Perkins on Facebook for up to date info on his book series.

Dad's Worried

My dad always worries about me and even though I tell him I’m fine he sometimes shows up at my house just to make sure all the doors are locked! I went to http://HomeSecurity101.com at his request after I bought the place to get the most diesel alarm they had and he even made me get a dog even though I hate animals. I do feel safer, I have to admit, but I think my dad goes a little too far just because he’s worried about me being a single female living alone. I love him to death but if he doesn’t back off soon I’m going to go crazy and I’m going to take him down with me! My dad’s been like this since my mom died and he’s like it with my other sisters, too, but since they still live at home they don’t really get the brunt of it. I think I suffer the most because I went out and became an independent woman which really shouldn’t have been an issue!

End Of Summer Weekend

     We decided to take the boys to San Antonio for there last weekend before school started.  We got up and left the house at 7 am....boy were we all tired!  We made it to the Zoo around 9:30 or so, the boys were super excited.  Now let me say this,  have you ever went somewhere that you used to go all the time as a kid, and been disappointed...well that was this instance, i remember the zoo being so much more enjoyable.  We felt like we were at Jurassic Park half the time, with all the no shows...i guess it was too hot for most of them.  Then were not even a quarter of the way through...and my camera craps out on me....We finished walking the zoo in the 100* heat, then we went and road the train...that was pretty cool, the boys loved it.

     After the Zoo we went to check in to the hotel I booked, Four Points by the Sheraton, then went and ate Pizza Hut.  After that we went back to the hotel to shower and get ready to walk the river walk, and dinner.  We road the Rio River Boat Tour (totally not worth the money), then we walked the river walk to the Hard Rock Cafe.  I think me and the hubby were more excited about that, than the kids were..lol...then back to the hotel for an early night...a whole day in 100*+ weather is exhausting.

Winding Down Summer

As summer winds down, ask yourself, did you complete everything on your list?  Did you take that vacation? or spend that quality time with your kids?  For some of you this is your last weekend to check off some of that stuff on your list, for others you still have two weeks.  Lets make the best of them.  You can check out your local happenings in your newspaper, or on your cities web site.  You may not have time to take a vacation, but I'm sure there are other close buy things you can accomplish.  Were headed to San Antonio this weekend, to visit the zoo, and hang out on the river-walk.   I booked a four-star hotel for less than $100 that's less than a half a mile from the river-walk.  And with our membership to the aquarium here, we get half off at the SA Zoo.  My kids are looking forward to this one last hurrah before they start school on Monday.  I'm sure you can find something similar to do around you.  Enjoy the Rest of your summer! :)

How do I attach the Images to the File Folder?

Glue page one (title page) to the front of the file folder, next glue the number page to the inside right flap of the file folder. You can take your file folder to any "teacher" supplies store and get it laminated for under a dollar, this will help extend the life of your game.  The last page are your apple coins, cut the coins out and laminate them (double up if you can).  

Your kids will love there new game, and you will love the price, and the fact that it's a hand made product by you.

Back to School Prep

Here are five tips to get your family ready for the new school year.

1. Discuss any changes in advance Is your kid starting middle or high school, or is it her first year using a locker, taking the bus, or schlepping a laptop?  Discuss these new challenges, listen to any concerns you kids have, and strategize.  Buy a lock and have her practice opening it (and keep a copy of the combiation at home).  Talk about the transition to a new school, and find out whether you can take an advance tour of the institution.  Show her where the bus stop is.  Pick out a sturdy bag for the laptop and reiterate that even though she can play games on this computer, it's not a toy and you expect it to make it through the school year -- at the very least!
2. Buy supplies early and get more than you need  Most schools don't distribute a list of necessary supplies until the first day, but why wait?  Buying early, say the beginning of August, means you;ll avoid the inevitable long lines and price hikes.  Staples even lets customers return items purchased online to a physical store, so you don't have to deal with shipping hassles.
3. Sketch out a routine  Make it as detailed as possible.  Who showers first?  Who prepares breakfast?  Who makes sure everyone actually gets up?  Put the routine into practice a week before the first day.  If it's not working, adjust it.  Be Flexible, sometimes a routine sounds good in theory, but just doesn't work for your family.  There's always room for tweaking.Get organized the night before  Before the kids go to bed (early, of course...I usually put mine to bed at eight), make sure everything is ready to go.  The bag should be packed, the first-day outfit picked out, lunch made, and school forms completed, photocopied (for your records), and sitting by the door.  
4. Allow extra time  We're not talking 5 min.  Give your family at least an additional half hour to get up and out the door.  You might need this cushion for a few days or even weeks until you get back into the school groove, so adjust that alarm!!

New Fun For Family Night Thanks to Endless Games

If your like our family, your getting burned out on all of your games.  It's time to look for new games.  I found a couple new games id like to share with you.

• QUACKGAMMON -  is a two player game for children ages 6+.  Its a fun and easy way to teach your your kids the century old game, Backgammon.  Quackgammon uses rubber duckies as the game pieces.  there are three yellow and three white.  The player that gets all there duckies "home" wins.  Let me tell you my six year old kicks butt!  You  can buy Quackgammon on the Endless Games Site.

Talented Country Newcomer Kelcie Burson

Kelcie Burson is a fourteen-year old Country Pop singing sensation! Burson's soulfully raspy voice has been compared to Miranda Lambert's and it's hard to believe such the young artist can pack so much feeling into her music. Her feeling in her song reminds me a little of Taylor Swift.

Kelcie is a Texas native who has been singing for years, her first public performance was in a 5th grade talent show, she saved the day by bravely stepping forward to sing, ’A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes’ as a solo when her four co-singers froze in a bout with stage fright.  The natural performer has been catching audiences’ and music professionals’ attention by singing in school, talent shows, music recitals and competitions.

Kelcie Burson, is getting everyone to notice her with her debut single "Notice Me" and her strong singing voice. Coming from Austin, Texas, this 14 year old charming country singer has just finished working on her debut music release in Nashville, Tennessee and also has now launched her official website.
Kelcie is on her way to stardom, this single is sure to be a hit.  "Notice Me" talks about how projecting your independence and staying true to yourself will get you noticed, in this case, a teenage girl and her crush.

Support Bead For Life and Win!

There are so many charities out there and it takes a while to find one that's near and dear to your heart!  This year i found a great organization called BeadforLife. First let me give you a little back story on BeadforLife: BeadforLife is a Colorado 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to eradicate extreme poverty by creating bridges of understanding between impoverished Africans and concerned world citizens. Ugandan women turn colorful recycled paper into beautiful beads. Women in Northern Uganda gather shea nuts and press them into shea butter for cosmetics and soaps.

And people who care open their hearts, homes and communities to buy and sell both products.  The beads and shea butter become income, food, medicine, school fees and hope. It is a small miracle that enriches us all.

The product are extremely beautiful, and its so easy to help out this cause.  I received a beautiful handcrafted recycled paper bangle!  It looks like a bracelet i would buy at anyone of my fave retail locations! The bracelet arrived in an great little Jute style storage drawstring pouch. There are seed beads in between the rolled paper beads, and there is a BeadforLife tag hanging. This lets you know you have an authentic BeadforLife bracelet! It is on a stretchy elastic thread, so it will stretch to fit you if you have a larger wrist.   I really enjoy the bright colors of the bracelet.  I get asked so many times where i got my bracelet from, BEAD FOR LIFE!!  The bracelet is light weight and forgot i was wearing it half the time. I am looking forward to getting some more singles to add to my collection. Hot New Toy! DaGeDar Review/Giveaway

     As a parent I am always on the look out for a new toy to keep my children's interest for more than 20 minutes.  Well I found one that's now on the top of my kids wish list for Christmas.  DaGeDar is the hot new toy from the creators of ZhuZhu Pets.  It's play pattern fosters imagination and creativity for hours of collaborative or solitary play.  DaGeDar combines speed, skill and strategy in a collectible racing game that is as affordable as it is fun.

 

The DaGeDar Story:

    

   DaGeDar are spirit-like entities driven by their desire to race.  DaGeDar reside in Dimension 33, a place previously unknown to humans.  DaGeDar enter the Earth's dimension to race so that their spirit can break free, and each DaGeDar is fueled by a personal motivation.  Whether they race for glory, fame, money, power, skill, knowledge, etc - one thing is certain: they must race to accomplish their ultimate quest!

    I was one of the lucky mom's that got to try this hot new toy from Mom Select and DaGeDar with my son and a four of his friends, needless to say I couldn't tear them away.  Between the races and stunts, the boys were completely engaged and entertain for hours.  They really enjoyed making up their own rules and own games, which is really easy to do.  They played to see who could launch it the furthest with the ball launcher, and who could do the best stunt off of the loop track.

    The collectible characters are my sons favorite, he really likes that you can go online and enter your code to learn more about your character.  He loves this game so much he has been generous enough to give one of my lucky followers a chance to win a DaGeDar ball set with two collectible balls!

Phineas and Ferb Disney Channel Original Movie Screening Party!

My boys and I enjoy watching Phineas and Ferbs summer adventures everyday, so I can't tell you how excited we were to hear that they made a movie!  I was expecting it to be an extended episode, It was nothing like an episode, it had a plot all it's own.  I was lucky enough to host the First-Ever Phineas and Ferb Disney Channel Original Movie Screening Party! for the event from the Disney Channel, and Child's Play Party.

I received goody bags for my guests, who were excited to come even before the goody bags. We did coloring pages for kids , and we played a trivia game. We all enjoyed Nachos like Buford  along with "Movie" candy and of course popcorn! The movie started here at 7:00, that's when the house actually got quiet (seriously it was crazy quiet).  And here is the basic plot:

The boys are testing out their new platypult, which is very likely exactly what you’d think it’d be, when they accidentally end up in Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s lab. Doofenshmirtz is having trouble getting his current “inator” — a device to open a cross-dimensional portal — to work, and the boys, who of course don’t know that he’s evil, help him out, with Perry trying to discourage them without giving himself away. 

They succeed, of course, and they all (and Candace and Perry) end up in an alternate dimension whose tri-state area is ruled by a truly evil, and competent, Doofenshmirtz (who even has an evil beard). The alternate Dr. D decides he’d like to take over our heroes’ tri-state area, too, so of course the Phineas and Ferb crew is helped out by there alternate dimension crew, to stop the takeover.  There's lots of action, and laughs.  I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the comedy they include.  If you are a Phineas and Ferb fan you can Like them on Facebook or Follow them on Twitter.  Enjoy the rest of your summer and don't forget to watch the all new episodes of Phineas and Ferb!
